First sun: how to protect yourself
The first beautiful days have arrived with spring springand that's something we're looking forward to! After months of cold and dreary weather, we're all keen to spend more time outdoors, to take advantage of the longer days and the sunshine to fill up on vitamin D! But be careful not to overdo the sun exposure: even in spring, the skin remains vulnerable to UV radiation. Here are a few tips to make the most of the sun's benefits, while protecting your skin effectively.
Why protect your skin at the first sign of sunshine?
"Oh, no need for sun creamit's only May...". You've probably heard this one before, or perhaps you've heard it yourself. While it's true that the pleasant temperatures have nothing to do with the intense heat of August, your skin is no less fragile when exposed to UVA-UVB rays. The reason? Your skin is no longer used to this kind of sunshine. So you need to expose your skin gradually, with appropriate sun protection, as soon as UV index index rises. In concrete terms, as soon as it reaches 5 and above - generally from May onwards in mainland France - you need to protect your skin from the sun.
The penalty for skipping the sun protection step? The sunburnSunburn is the most common form of sunburn, and it's the most common form of sunburn in the world, with redness, pain and sometimes blistering, reflecting the skin's inability to defend itself. Solar erythema, the other name for sunburnis common in the months of May and June, as spring temperatures don't necessarily encourage people to be wary of UV rays. But caution is called for, even when drinking coffee on a terrace...
Of course, unprotected skin also exposes itself to harmful damage less immediately visible, but nonetheless very real. UVA and UVB rays cause oxidative stress and premature premature aging of cells. In other words, your face and body are at risk of premature wrinkling, loss of firmness and the appearance of brown spots. When you're in the sun, your body produces melanin in response to UVA-UVB rays. When melanin is produced in excessive quantities, an hyperpigmentation can appear on the face, back, décolleté or any other area of the body exposed to unprotected sunlight. Unfortunately, this can also happen if the protection factor of your sunscreen is insufficient! Let's not forget the risk of skin cancer The number of melanomas has been rising steadily in France over the past few decades.
Preparing your skin for the sun
A few simple gestures can prepare your skin for the sun, so you can enjoy the sunny days with complete peace of mind.
Expose yourself to the sun gradually Even if it's tempting to spend all day outside at the end of winter, limit your exposure to give your skin time to get used to it.
Avoid exposure during the hottest hours, i.e. between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the afternoon.
Protect your face with a wide-brimmed hatand wear sunglasses to protect your eyes too. What's good for kids is good for adults too :-)
Choose shade whenever possible!
