Salicylic acid, to the rescue of acne-prone skin

Acne-prone skin is difficult to treat.Reducingblemishes and calming skin inflammation while ensuring good hydration requires a targeted beauty routine, with ingredients carefully selected for their purifying and mattifying properties. Among The active ingredients the darlings of combination, oily or acne-prone skin issalicylic acid, which has proven its worth for years in the fight against pimples and blackheads. Let's take a closer look at this star ingredient in the Northern Light range, perfect for overcoming minor skin blemishes and dull complexions.

What is salicylic acid?

Salicylic acid, also known as BHA (beta-hydroxy acid), is an aromatic organic compound. It is naturally synthesized by various plants, such as the willow tree ( salix in Latin), which gives its name to our unusual ingredient! While willow bark is rich in salicylic acid, it is also found in other plants, such as Meadowsweet, and in smaller quantities in certain fruits (apricots, raspberries, dates...).

Theanti-inflammatory properties of salicylic acid have been recognized for centuries, as willow bark has been used since antiquity as a natural aspirin. A few years ago, cosmetics began to take an interest in this dermatologically interesting active ingredient. While salicylic acid stimulates collagen fibers to fight the signs of aging, it is for its keratolytic and anti-acne effects that it has become so highly prized. And it's not for nothing that cosmetics containing salicylic acid are flourishing on the market! But beware: quality and efficacy are not always equal, as concentrations can vary greatly from one formula to another. While some brands use a synthetic version in their products, at Polaar we prefersalicylic acidofplantorigin. It comes from a small berry that grows in the undergrowth of North America, harvested as usual in an ethical and sustainable way. More natural, more effective, it limits the risk of skin reactions, especially for the most sensitive skins. This choice is in line with our convictions: nature and the polar landscapes abound with treasures to care for all skin types, and it would be a shame not to take advantage of them!

Treating acne with salicylic acid-based skin care products

Oily, acne-prone skin has a number of characteristic defects: enlarged pores, pimples, shine, dull complexion...

The cause of these irregularities is an overproduction of sebum. This oily substance, naturally present on the skin's surface, forms a natural cutaneous barrier that protects cells from drying out and external aggression. However, this balance is fragile, and seborrhea, i.e. excessive sebum production, can occur at the slightest change. For example, during hormonal upheavals, at puberty or during pregnancy, when we eat too much fat or sugar, or when ourlifestyle leaves something to be desired (lack of sleep, stress, pollution, a botched beauty routine or the use of unsuitable products, such as coarse scrubs that attack the skin...). Certain medications can also alter the skin's balance.

Sebum accumulates on the skin's surface, slowing cell renewal. Pores become clogged, leading to the appearance of various imperfections that are not always easy to get rid of in the long term.

This is where the antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and keratolytic properties of salicylic acid really come into their own! Ready for healthier, brighter skin and a new routine that really makes a difference? Eclat Boréal Smoothing Cream is a little richer, but still without the oily effect. Its velvety-cream formula resurfaces skin while reviving radiance.
