Oily skin: what moisturizer should I choose for my face?

Adopting the right steps to care for oily skin isn't always easy! Prone to imperfections, oily skin needs to be gently cleansed and moisturized with specific creams to regulate excessive sebum production. Too rich a skincare product, too harsh a scrub, and the problem gets worse: skin reacts by becoming even shinier, and even oilier! Rest assured, it's possible to regain beautiful, clear, matte skin thanks to a targeted and adapted beauty routine. Follow our guide and we'll tell you how to choose the right moisturizing face cream to get rid of oily skin and its inconveniences!

What causes oily skin?

As you know, there are many different types of skin: some are dry by nature, others oily or combination (i.e. dry on the cheeks and temples, and oily on the T-zone: forehead, nose, chin), and each skin type needs targeted skincare to address its specific issues. But the condition of your skin can also vary according to the season, climate or living conditions: stress, smoking, pollution, UV rays, the use of unsuitable cosmetics or hormonal changes are all factors that can influence the appearance and quality of your skin.

Oily skin is often attributed to puberty and the acne that often goes with it, but adult women are not spared. Pregnancy, pre-menopause or hormonal imbalance can also cause skin type to evolve towards oily skin with imperfections - a change we could do without!

So it's perfectly normal to experience episodes of oily skin over the course of your life, and it's normal to want to do something about it!

In concrete terms, oily skin is due to an overproduction of sebum. Sebum is the oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands. Along with water and sweat, it forms part of the hydrolipidic film that acts as a barrier for the skin. This fine film covers the entire epidermis, protecting it from external aggression and preserving its integrity.

The presence of sebum on the skin's surface is therefore natural and essential for maintaining a good level of hydration, and keeping skin supple and youthful. The situation becomes more complicated when the sebaceous glands begin to produce excess sebum. In the jargon, this is known as hyperseborrhea. You know the consequences: skin becomes shiny and oily to the touch, and pores clog up more easily, leading to small skin imperfections: acne, white pimples, dilated pores, blackheads and even microcysts can dot your face. Make-up doesn't hold up well, and skin quickly becomes shiny again, despite your efforts to mattify it. Choosing skin care products specifically formulated for this type of skin, and adopting the right reflexes on a daily basis, is essential to curbing sebum production.

Oily skin: the right steps to take

Let's face it: adopting a healthy lifestyle, with a balanced diet that limits fried foods, sodas, cold meats, sugar and alcohol among others, can only be beneficial for your skin. And don't forget to drink enough (at least 1.5L of water) for a radiant complexion!

In the bathroom, you may need to set up a new beauty routine, and adopt new habits to say no to hyperseborrhea! Carefully removing make-up and gently cleansing your skin morning and night , without aggressing it, is the first reflex you should adopt to regain healthy skin. We often have the impression that the more a facial cleanser "cleanses", the more effective it is: and yet! Over-aggressive cleansing doesn't purify the epidermis, as it produces exactly the opposite effect, creating a rebound effect: the sebaceous glands, in a protective mechanism, start to produce even more sebum to defend themselves. The result is a vicious circle that does nothing to stop oily skin problems!

However, oily skin clogs up more quickly than others, so we recommend exfoliating once or twice a week to thoroughly cleanse the skin. But always with a gentle exfoliant that respects the epidermis and gently removes impurities!

Delicate skincare products are therefore essential: light, airy gel or cream textures, scrubs without stripping beads, non-comedogenic make-up and soothing formulas. Avoid overly aggressive ingredients such as soap and alcohol, and opt for mattifying ingredients.

At Polaar, we've developed several products to care for oily skin and get rid of the shine and small imperfections that come with it!

Moisturizing oily skin

All skin types need to be moisturized: whether combination, dry, sensitive or oily, the epidermis naturally loses water every day - notably through perspiration. This water loss needs to be compensated for from within, by drinking regularly, but also externally, by applying a highly moisturizing cream that will intensely nourish the skin, plump up your face and restore radiance to your complexion. However, the needs of oily skin are different from those of other skin types. The challenge is to nourish the skin and replenish it with water, while helping to regulate sebum production!

For this, nothing beats creams with light, fluid textures like our Moisturizing Jelly Ice Source.

Its 96% natural formula is rich in Iceberg Water, the purest pollution-free water in the world, which we've encapsulated in liposomes to bring you all its benefits. It acts like moisturizing micro-patches that intensely hydrate your face, restoring its radiance and suppleness.

Thanks to the presence of mattifying powders, this care mattifies shine and regulates sebum production to ensure a fresh, matte complexion in all circumstances.

Its ultra-light, fresh gel texture is quickly absorbed, with no greasy or sticky effects, making it an excellent make-up base!

Skin also has specific needs during the night: it requires special care to help it regenerate while you sleep, for a radiant complexion in the early hours of the morning. To give cell regeneration a helping hand, we recommend Polar Night Revitalizing Cream, which works miracles on oily skin, as well as on stressed, devitalized skin. Its best-kept secret? The presence ofBoreal Algae, which has the capacity to eliminate toxins and repair damage caused by the day's aggressions (pollution, stress...). Rhodimenia Borelia, the algae used in this treatment, is able to synthesize phytomelatonin - the plant version of melatonin - thanks to moonlight: it is therefore highly effective in activating cell regeneration while you sleep.

We've combined it with Eau d'Immortelle, which soothes and relaxes irritated skin. Its matte finish, delicate fragrance and effectiveness are sure to win you over and restore your skin to its original beauty!

In short, oily skin, like other skin types, needs to be pampered with dedicated cosmetics that gently cleanse, purify and moisturize. Oily skin doesn't have to be a fatality: the right care products, with carefully selected active ingredients like those found in Polaar products, can reverse the trend, leaving you with refined skin texture, a matte finish and a radiant complexion day after day!
